MarColMar CETME L GEN 2: Spain’s 5.56 Rifle

The CETME L stands as Spain’s 5.56x45mm successor to the battle-proven CETME C. It brings the famed roller-delayed blowback operating system into a smaller, lighter service-rifle platform.

MarColMar Firearms brought the design to the U.S. market by pairing original Spanish surplus parts with newly manufactured American components.

The CETME L Gen 2 stays visually and mechanically recognizable while adding essential practical updates for modern gun owners.

Origins of the Platform

The CETME L was engineered as a purpose-built 5.56x45mm rifle. It wasn’t a simple downsized version of its larger 7.62mm predecessor.

Adopted by Spanish armed forces in the mid-1980s, it served as the primary infantry rifle through the late 1990s. The military eventually replaced it with the Heckler & Koch G36.

It never achieved worldwide reach or massive production numbers of the CETME C or HK G3.

Even so, the CETME L remains a distinct evolutionary step in roller-delayed firearm design. It preserves smooth mechanical principles within a compact footprint.

Surplus Roots and Modern U.S. Manufacturing

The Gen 2 combines original military surplus parts with a fresh U.S.-made stamped receiver.

MarColMar uses robotic welding during production while retaining the sheet-metal construction that defines the original platform.

MarColMar also revised the receiver’s magazine feed geometry to better accommodate standard STANAG AR-15/M16 magazines.

Original Spanish rifles were issued with a steel magazine of their own design, although STANAG magazines could also function in the platform. The Gen 2 refines the feeding geometry around the widely available STANAG pattern.

A 16-inch hammer-forged barrel completes the core build. It uses a 1:7 twist, nitride treatment, and chamber fluting based on original CETME specifications.

The barrel brings modern U.S. production to the Gen 2 while keeping the rifle’s roller-delayed operating system and mechanical character intact.

Handling, Optics, and Modern Feature Set

At roughly 7.5 pounds, the CETME L remains substantial without becoming oversized for a 5.56 service-rifle design. Its roller-delayed operation also gives the rifle a mechanical character distinct from the gas-operated AR-15 family.

MarColMar added a low-profile Picatinny rail welded directly to the top receiver. Shooters can easily mount modern red dots or magnified optics without relying on awkward aftermarket clamp mounts.

A grey Cerakote finish replaces the traditional Spanish olive green with a durable protective coating. At the same time, the original fixed stock, distinctive handguard shape, and tactile charging handle geometry preserve the iconic military silhouette.
