It’s becoming increasingly obvious that the days of abundance are a thing of the past. Money is tight, basic necessities are grossly overpriced, and rent throughout America is untenable.
Put simply, millions of Americans are having a difficult time surviving leading many to turn to a subsistence lifestyle.
Subsistence Lifestyle
If you have cable, chances are you’ve seen reality shows depicting this way of life. These vignettes were depicted as outliers as recently as a decade ago. However, with the state of the world, it’s becoming more commonplace in America and worldwide.
Individuals are taking matters into their own hands. They’re liquidating their possessions and moving far from urban megacities, choosing a simpler way of life. This phenomenon parallels Emerson’s “Self-Reliance”.
Self-Reliance
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) championed a world where one must have unfailing trust and confidence in one’s faculties. His worldview was adopted by the likes of Henry David Thoreau, who saw its brilliance and implemented it into his own life. More than one hundred and thirty years later, “self-reliance” is still relevant.

Self-reliance is the ability to depend on oneself for guidance, support, and decision-making. It emphasizes personal independence, confidence, and resourcefulness. It can lead to greater fulfillment and empowerment, allowing individuals to navigate with autonomy.
In short, it’s big government’s worst nightmare and it’s only feasible with… you guessed it; a gun.
Consequently, the anti-gun lobby willingly subverts this narrative, instead employing a mass PSYOP campaign designed with one purpose: make guns and gun owners appear evil.
It’s About Control
Any government wishing to retain power must control its citizens at all costs. This is why many are leaving densely populated areas for a simpler life.
Covid-19 was a perfect example of how easily governments can exert control when desired. Thousands lost self-governance seemingly overnight. Those not fortunate enough to live in the U.S. were locked down for nearly two years.
Yet amidst the darkness, many saw the light. They witnessed daily rights fall by the wayside and vowed to never let it happen again. Hence, the record-breaking gun sales of 2021 and the rash of folk adopting self-reliance.
It’s no shock to surmise that should they pull the plug, those accustomed to fending for themselves will conduct business as usual while the rest of the populace struggles to survive.
Imagine if one needs Big Brother to eat; how likely is it for them to comply with the state’s demands, no matter how ludicrous? Now imagine a scenario when Uncle Sam attempts to exert its control on an individual who practices self-reliance. A starkly different outcome to say the least.
The name of the game is control. Practice self-reliance in your daily life, the state’s influence decreases exponentially.
Subsistence and Americana
Much of the very fabric that makes America what it is is interwoven with our love for guns.
Shooting skills were crucial for survival among American men during colonial times. These skills fostered a sense of independence and self-reliance, which were key values in early American frontier life.
Men often had to rely on their ability to shoot accurately to defend their families and communities, making it not just a necessity but a fundamental aspect of their identity and culture during that period.
Ironically, strip everything away, and not much has changed. In the event of an emergency, the ability to depend on oneself for solutions is invaluable.
Furthermore, self-reliance is synonymous with prepping. Practical skills like hunting, fishing, first-aid prowess, and other survival techniques can all be traced to an ideological belief that one can only rely on oneself in any given context.
More than anything, self-reliance is a mindset.
It’s about embracing adaptability and problem-solving and not waiting for an extraneous force to come to your aid.
And it’s becoming increasingly popular for many Americans who can see the writing on the wall; order out of chaos.
They create the problem. They drop it in our laps to deal with, and because so many of us are toilet paper soft, we comply with their every demand so they bail us out. The ultimate casualty; freedom.
