Armscor 1911

July 25, 2025 by Greg Leave a Comment

In the great debate of “what’s the better handgun: 1911 or Glock?”, I always fall on the side of 1911. Glock pistols shoot well, but they just don’t feel good to me. The 1911 feels good in my hands. The angle of the grip, the weight, and even the recoil when shooting. Growing up in California, the ammo capacity advantage didn’t really exist. Plus, with modern technology, that isn’t really a factor at all anymore.

The first time I went shooting my stepdad had me shoot 3 handguns. The Ruger MKII, Ruger Blackhawk, and his 1911. Those were the 3 handguns he would bring out for first time shooters. Years later when I started working in the firearms industry, I bought my mom a handgun. I had her take a class and shoot several handguns. My mom wanted a 1911 because she liked my stepdad’s. So, I bought my mom a Rock Island 1911.

When I got myself a 1911, I bought a Charles Daly 1911. The year mine was made was during the period Armscor manufactured them. I have had zero issues with the function of that gun. This fact is why I trusted getting a Rock Island for my mom. I knew I could trust my life to it. I wouldn’t trust my mom’s life to anything less.

My 1911 was my primary carry gun for several years. I could easily store extra magazines in my pockets, and the pistol was thin enough (for a .45 ACP) that it didn’t noticeably print with the way I dressed. Since the pistol has 2 forms of safety (manual and grip), it mentally made me feel better. I knew that it would take several things to go wrong for it to “just go off” while I carried it. Since the pistol is single–action, I always carried it with a round in the chamber and the hammer cocked. Putting the hammer down defeats the point of having a round in the chamber and is honestly unsafe to do.

I have since purchased several other handguns. They all have their own reasons and purposes. I don’t use them as a “one size fits all” type of gun anymore like I did with the 1911. Before I got my CZ75, my 1911 was my match gun. Before my GP100 the 1911 was my ranch sidearm. I even had a magazine full of snake shot for it. Armscor made a pistol that has taken my abuse for years and just keeps running. I would buy a 1911 made by them again without hesitation.
