Ever since I started shooting, there was one “truth” I kept telling people. Hi-Point firearms are a waste of money. Hi-Point has since then made me eat my words.
The main reason I decided to buy the Hi-Point 995 was simple. I wanted a pistol caliber carbine I didn’t “need” to care about. A trunk gun. Why 9mm? I wanted something more than .22 LR and wouldn’t blow up a rabbit if I needed to shoot one. The firearm was cheap and, to my surprise, had solid reviews. So, I bit the bullet and bought one.
There are several options for the Hi-Point 995. The one I picked came with a Red Dot. The Red Dot is actually why I chose it. Aside from a Red Dot, it also came with a sling and a 10-round magazine. Hi-Point also offers a lifetime warranty. You have to go to their website to register for it.
“Damage, age, plain old wear and tear — these things happen. When they do, Hi-Point® customers enjoy a lifetime, no-questions-asked warranty. And lifetime means just that — free repairs for the life of the gun, whether you are the first owner, or the third. Hi-Point® service is fast, friendly and expertly performed.” – Hi-Point Firearms
After getting it all together, the first thing I did was try out the iron sights. The iron sights it uses are peep-hole sights. Being used to those from the M-16, it wasn’t hard to adjust to. The sights work well, and the rifle is fairly accurate using them. My one issue with the iron sights is that I can’t noticeably tell how much I adjusted them by feel or sound. I couldn’t feel or hear it “click” as I moved the rear sight. I got it one point, but that was a little annoying.
The model I got came with a Red Dot. For the money, it is a good Red Dot. The dot was just out of my line of sight. The Red Dot can also be changed to a Green Dot. That is a nice perk. Some situations red is easier to pick up and in some green is. Just ask any Sporting Clays Shooter. After getting used to the set up I genuinely like it. During daylight hours I have an easier focus for the front sight. During nighttime hours I have a visible sight without glow sights. I also still have sights if the battery dies.
One issue I did have with it is I couldn’t initially see it in front of the rear sight. Not without a lot of adjustments to the optic. It was easy to get the Red Dot sighted in after having zeroed the irons sights. I just adjusted the dot to the tip of my front sight. That put me right on target. My accuracy improved with the Red Dot. It gave me a stronger point to focus. Pretty much the same reason I add nail polish to my front sights.
Overall, I am extremely happy with this firearm. It has some minor issues, but for the money spent they are nothing. I have had a harder time with Kimbers. If you need an “End of the World” gun on a budget you can’t go wrong with this carbine.
