The language of the Second Amendment is pretty clear: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The only ones who seem unable to comprehend that simple sentence is the gun control crowd. Fortunately, for the rest of us the House Judiciary Committee just approved the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, a measure that, if approved by Congress, would then be signed into law by the president. Doing so would do away with state prohibitions on the carrying of concealed guns for self-defense, as well as a host of other Second Amendment infringements. When the initial reviews of the Ruger Precision Rifle came out, I was skeptical about the gloriously rosey review noting groundbreaking features… it just screamed to me that someone was all too happy to whip out knee pads and a bib to be one of the first to review Ruger’s latest, so I waited a until now for my full review. Initially, my eyes rolled hard with the thought that Ruger has just dropped its standard, Mauser-influenced action into a billet chassis, and that did not sound particularly groundbreaking—I was of course wrong completely on that point. I’ve gotten used to the media and the anti-gun crowd blaming the firearm every time there is a high-profile shooting event. After all, they already have an agenda to vilify guns—regardless the facts in my opinion. However, I about fell out of my chair when the jury in San Francisco found Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, a.k.a. Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, not guilty on the counts of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Kate Steinle but guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Allow me to explain. [Read more…] about Steinle Jury: It Was the Gun’s Fault
The holidays are just around the corner. As hunters, shooters, collectors, or just plain plinkers, it’s a natural instinct to want to share our enjoyment of firearms with others. What better way to do that than to make a gift of a firearm to a family member, close friend or relative? [Read more…] about How to Give a Firearm as a Gift — Legally
As a young man, my constant companion on duty and when hunting and hiking, was not a 10mm, but instead a Smith and Wesson Combat Magnum. While the four-inch barrel .357 Magnum is a great all around handgun for personal defense, I moved to the 1911 .45, which I found ideal and managed to carry on duty. With the 1911, safety, reliability, and hit probability are all that could be desired. Occasionally, I wondered if it was practical to combine the features of the 1911 with a hard-hitting 10mm cartridge to make a suitable outdoor 1911. Which model should I buy for my first concealed carry handgun? The question is common enough, and for good reason. At times, you may choose to carry more than one firearm for self-defense, different guns—depending on the weather and clothing, or even a back-up gun (BUG). Whichever route you go, here are six tips to consider when choosing your first handgun for concealed carry. [Read more…] about Concealed Carry: Choosing Your First Handgun
There is no shortage of concealed-carry chest thumping going on when people start talking about how heroic they would be in an active shooter situation or during some type of robbery. And, may I add, bless the patriots who are willing to answer the call, by deciding to carry concealed. However, having the ability and willingness is different than the responsibility or understanding of knowing whether or not getting involved is actually going to help the situation or potentially cause confusion that could get innocent people killed, including you.
