CZ 455 Varmint and Trainer .22 LR Rifles

I fired my first .22 caliber rifle at perhaps 10 years old. I have been through many rifles always upgrading the .22. The .22 offers excellent economy and is the place where we should all start. The .22 is also the place we should go when we are having marksmanship issues. Today, one of my favorite .22 LR offerings is the CZ 455 series. Review: Fiocchi 22 LR — First Class Plinking and Hunting

When I am shooting on my own time and my own dime, most of the shooting is that pastime called plinking—most often with Fiocchi 22 LR. I am fortunate to have plenty of dirt clods on a berm and I also use clay birds. I do not use the time proven tin can so much these days. I use paper because Birchwood Casey offers so many variations. [Read more…] about Review: Fiocchi 22 LR — First Class Plinking and Hunting

Review: Fiocchi .30-06 Springfield Ammunition

If you own a rifle in .30-06 Springfield, you know how powerful, accurate, and effective this cartridge can be, but do you know how well Fiocchi .30-06 Springfield ammunition shoots? The .30-06 was developed to match the German’s 8mm Mauser. The .30-06 outstrips the .303 British and 7.7 Japanese for power. [Read more…] about Review: Fiocchi .30-06 Springfield Ammunition

Gun Test: Rex Zero 9mm Compact

Recently, I was able to obtain, test, and evaluate the Arex Rex Zero 9mm compact. The results were good, as the pistol has proven reliable with every load, more accurate than expected, and ergonomically pleasing. The pistol is in some ways based on proven operating principles and the SIG P series handguns, but in other ways offers a fresh pistol from a proven manufacturing base. Review: March Rifle Scopes — The Choice of World Champions

A few months ago, I had never heard of March Rifle Scopes. Today, I am much the better for the experience. I decided I should test and evaluate at least one top-end rifle scope—for my benefit and the benefit of my readers. There are some wonderful things in the world that need to be examined, and when you are over 60, time is limited. One of those wonderful things is a riflescope that wins matches to 1,000 yards or more. March Rifle Scopes are a top choice of elite shooters. Ready for Self-Defense or Fight Ready?

When training, you cannot judge an individual based on the skills he has been taught nor can you judge a system by one student. Students can learn additional systems to add to their arsenal, but few who train are learning to fight, most train for self-defense only. [Read more…] about Ready for Self-Defense or Fight Ready?

Review: Taurus PT1911 — Street-Ready Rail Gun

The Taurus PT1911 is an affordable handgun with a long list of features. The 1911 is a great service and protection pistol, not to mention a match winning competition handgun. The problem for most is that the better class of 1911 pistols are increasingly expensive. [Read more…] about Review: Taurus PT1911 — Street-Ready Rail Gun

Beretta M9 — From Military Service to Classic

When the United States Army adopted the Beretta M9, it was quite a surprise to many of us. The apple cart wasn’t upset; it was wrecked. The Beretta replaced the long-serving 1911A1 .45-caliber pistol. While there are many fans of the 1911, there are also many detractors and some who felt the pistol was long overdue for replacement. 3 Things You Should Know About Close Quarters Battle

All skills are an amalgamation of basic skills and things we have learned. The problem is that many folks do not study, and if they do, they study things that are of no utility in personal defense. Most shooters engage in superficial dabbling. They may try the inside the waistband holster and the appendix draw briefly, and sometimes try the crossdraw, but not thoroughly examine any of them, which means they have failed to prepare for a close quarters battle (CQB). The .45 Colt — From Cowboy to Action to Self-Defense

There are convincing advocates of individual handgun cartridges. Legendary writers such as Skeeter Skelton and Bill Jordan carried the .357 Magnum professionally and felt it was the ideal outdoors and personal defense cartridge. Elmer Keith favored the .44 Special, but then, when he got the .44 Magnum, he was vocal in praises of this cartridge too. There are individuals who use a variety of calibers for certain chores, and then there are those that choose a handgun caliber early on and use it for a lifetime, but who is championing the .45 Colt? Gun Test: Ruger’s New GP100 7-Shot .357 Mag. Revolver

The buying public is voting for revolvers and buying them in great numbers. Fueling the new trend, Ruger introduced a seven-shot version of its popular GP100. While there has been a previous seven shooter in .327 Magnum, the new Ruger GP100 fires the .357 Magnum cartridge. [Read more…] about Gun Test: Ruger’s New GP100 7-Shot .357 Mag. Revolver

Combat Shotguns: Ready for a Riot or Home Defense

Odds are, you’ll never be in a riot or have need to try and break one up. However, the apply named riot shotgun, also called a combat shotgun, is arguably the the best all-around personal defense firearm in the world. With its shorter, 18-inch barrel and high capacity magazine, knock-down power and intimidation factor, the riot gun offers the edge in close-quarters personal defense that cannot be overstated.
