Taran Butler is a monster on the 3-gun course and makes gear that has lightened to many of our collective wallets—yet we run back for more. Innovation Reaches the Charging Handle: Meet the HABU

AR charging handles are pretty mundane. Standard, left-handed, or ambi if you want to really put on the ritz. That was true until the 2017 launch of the HABU charging handle, a completely redesigned piece of hardware. Falcon 37, maker of the HABU, sent the Mod 1 model for testing. Here’s what happened. How Anti Gunners Manipulate Data to Advance Their Cause

Numbers are a powerful tool when used properly. Like all powerful tools, they can be used for good or to deceive. On one hand, the Violence Policy Center’s chart is not factually untrue. On the other, of course, the snapshot is purposefully timed to mislead the reader. Are both sides guilty or have the anti gunners run amok? Responsible Gun Storage

Responsible gun storage is a key element to gun ownership. Far too often have we read about a firearm accident due to careless firearm storage. Likewise, as cool as a firearm hidden in a piece of furniture or flag frame may seem, criminals will find them. Have you ever looked up the stats of crimes committed with stolen firearms and wondered how the criminals are able to steal so many guns? [Read more…] about Responsible Gun Storage

The Safest Place to Store What I Found at SHOT Show

It’s the last day of SHOT Show and after walking the event for the last few days and identifying the new things I may need to add to my collection (you know things like the FN 15 pistol chambered in 300BLK, Franklin Armory Militia Praefector, Arex Alpha pistol, CZ Scorpion Carbine Extended Handguard, and IWI Tavor T12 Shotgun just to name a few), I realized I was going to need a new safe. Editor’s Pick: The Best Thing I Saw at the 2018 SHOT Show

Allow me a moment, and please stick with story to the end—it starts a little slow, but you will not be disappointed if you make it to the end. Seldom do I write in first person or blatantly allow my personal biases to dictate content, but this is an exception. SHOT Show 2018 was full of the normal hustle and bustle. New handguns, shotguns, rifles, and optics were everywhere—certainly as far as the eye could see. There was no shortage of new clothing options, accessories, ammunition, magazines—all the toys and gear we crave. Yet, the best thing I saw at the 2018 SHOT Show was not on the show floor. In fact, it was not even at the show. My top pick for 2018 was a harmonica. [Read more…] about Editor’s Pick: The Best Thing I Saw at the 2018 SHOT Show

New Handguns for 2018

In an age when everything plastic rules, a handgun made of steel with a design more than 100 years old still drives the market. We are talking, of course, of the fabled 1911, and a third of the new guns that follow are based on this legendary platform. That’s not to say that there is no interest in itty-bitty pocket pistols, and it’s clear the revolver is not the antiquated firearm many assume. In fact, when it comes to new handguns for 2018, there is a good mix of old, new, plastic, and steel, with a wheelgun or two thrown in for good measure.

Armenian Sniper Makes 2,145 Meter Shot on Azeri Border

An Armenian social media personality who closely follows the Armenian Military side of the extremely contested eastern border with Azerbaijan recently posted a narrated video on his Facebook page of what appears to be a filmed engagement of Azeri troops in the disputed border region. Both countries have had a long history of cross-border military action between the two, but our focus here is on the Armenian sniper and his precision shooting that transpired. A Closer Look At The Molot Sanctions

While walking around SHOT Show this year, I couldn’t help but see the ads running for the Last of Molot and directing me to Booth 11217. With the prospect of the promise of free patch and a chance to check out the last of the VEPR’s, I couldn’t resist. As many of you know, this year the federal government put the final nail in the coffin for anyone wanted access to quality Russian firearms. The question is, “Why and how did we get here?” [Read more…] about A Closer Look At The Molot Sanctions

3 Things You Should Know About Close Quarters Battle

All skills are an amalgamation of basic skills and things we have learned. The problem is that many folks do not study, and if they do, they study things that are of no utility in personal defense. Most shooters engage in superficial dabbling. They may try the inside the waistband holster and the appendix draw briefly, and sometimes try the crossdraw, but not thoroughly examine any of them, which means they have failed to prepare for a close quarters battle (CQB). Inside: Bond Arms Factory

I am fortunate that my real job takes me all across this great country. Recently, I found myself in the Southwest Dallas area, which made a trip to Granbury Texas less of an epic adventure. The trip to Bond Arms facility was both fun and educational. I met the owner, Gordon Bond, many of his staff, and of course his robots… yes, robots. [Read more…] about Inside: Bond Arms Factory

The .45 Colt — From Cowboy to Action to Self-Defense

There are convincing advocates of individual handgun cartridges. Legendary writers such as Skeeter Skelton and Bill Jordan carried the .357 Magnum professionally and felt it was the ideal outdoors and personal defense cartridge. Elmer Keith favored the .44 Special, but then, when he got the .44 Magnum, he was vocal in praises of this cartridge too. There are individuals who use a variety of calibers for certain chores, and then there are those that choose a handgun caliber early on and use it for a lifetime, but who is championing the .45 Colt? Bump Fire — Vote “No” on New Gun Control

The Department of Justice (DOJ) anticipates issuing a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that would interpret the statutory definition of “machine gun” in the National Firearms Act of 1934 and Gun Control Act of 1968 to clarify whether certain devices, commonly known as bump fire stocks, fall within that definition. Before doing so, the DOJ and ATF need to gather information and comments from the public and industry regarding the nature and scope of the market for these devices. Medical Marijuana: ‘We Won’t Take Guns Away’

Marijuana, whether for medical or recreational purposes, is being legalized in many states across the country. Recreational uses have less protections, but the question of whether Medical Marijuana users should be allowed to own or possess firearms is at the forefront. According to the Federal government, it is illegal regardless of whether certain state laws, such as those in Pennsylvania may have legalized it.  [Read more…] about Medical Marijuana: ‘We Won’t Take Guns Away’
