The Evolution of the .30 Caliber
The .308 cartridge began life in the primordial swamps of… If you are reading this article, I really don’t need to tell you about the .308 round. You already know that it pulls triple duty as a machine gun round and a mid-length sniper round, and as the cartridge a few guys in the platoon use for those times when the 5.56 just isn’t enough. It was built (kinda sorta) to duplicate the .30-06 but in a much shorter action. It mostly succeeded and certainly took the .30-06 out of most military usage. What else do you need to say about the .30 caliber? [Read more…] about The Evolution of the .30 Caliber

Review: Galil ACE GAR1651.308 7.61×51 Rifle
Major Pandemic was fortunate to be one of the first writers to get his hands on the newly introduced Galil ACE GAR1651 .308/7.62×51 NATO, and I have had a chance to wring it out pretty well. What I will say is, this is my favorite among the .308 semi-auto rifles I own. It is not the lightest, the prettiest, or even the most accurate, however it can take a ton of abuse and still deliver bullets where they need to go. I not only like this 8.7-pound rifle, I love it. Review: Otis 7.62/5.56 MPSR Cleaning System
If you have a .308/7.62 caliber rifle and need a comprehensive, compact, packable cleaning kit for the field, then the Otis 7.62mm MPSR Cleaning System is an obvious choice. However, there is more to the Otis cleaning kit than just size. [Read more…] about Review: Otis 7.62/5.56 MPSR Cleaning System

Review: Smith and Wesson M&P10 .308 Rifle
For some of us, the watchword is ‘sometimes you need a .308.’ The .223/5.56mm platform is a wonderful close-quarters combat system and may be accurate at extended range. However, the punch needed for some chores just isn’t there. There are shooters who hunt medium-sized game, use a rifle for defense, or like long-range shooting and are limited by the .223 Remington cartridge. Most of us feel that jumping over the 6.8 or the .300 Blackout straight to a .308, such as the S&W M&P10, makes sense. [Read more…] about Review: Smith and Wesson M&P10 .308 Rifle

Hits Count — Stabilize Your Rifle
When it comes to rifle shooting, fast hits are what counts in hunting and personal defense scenarios. When sighting in the rifle from the benchrest, we have all of the time in the world. Recently, I sighted my personal M1A1 with Leatherwood scope in from the rest and enjoyed 1 MOA groups with Federal MSR Fusion ammunition. However, I cannot expect a fraction of this accuracy when firing off hand at the 100-yard line, because you do not have the same opportunity to stabilize your rifle—or do you? Gun Test: Savage Model 12 – A True Tack Driver
Savage Arms offers a number of affordable rifles beginning with the Savage Axis and the impressive Axis II. The Savage Model 12 is a formidable rifle that may be called a rifle for shooters rather than hunters. The machining and heat-treating of the receiver are a step above that of other Savage bolt-action rifles. The bolt is more massive and features opposed locking lugs. Bolt lift is 90 degrees. A feature I particularly like is the oversize bolt handle. The rifle’s bolt and receiver are impressive for those with an eye to quality. Review: Windham Weaponry SRC-308
I was excited to test the new Windham Weaponry WW-308 (MSRP $1,708, but K-Var’s price is under $1,250). I have shot 223/5.56 AR-15s ever since I was 13 years old, but had never really had a chance to try out the AR-15s big brother (often referred to as the AR-10). The real treat was trying this rifle platform out with Windham Weaponry, a company rich in AR-15 history. [Read more…] about Review: Windham Weaponry SRC-308
Ruger Precision Rifle RPR .308, .243, 6.5 Creedmoor Review
When the initial reviews of the Ruger Precision Rifle came out, I was skeptical about the gloriously rosey review noting groundbreaking features… it just screamed to me that someone was all too happy to whip out knee pads and a bib to be one of the first to review Ruger’s latest, so I waited a until now for my full review. Initially, my eyes rolled hard with the thought that Ruger has just dropped its standard, Mauser-influenced action into a billet chassis, and that did not sound particularly groundbreaking—I was of course wrong completely on that point.
