“Concerned a Co-Worker Is Dangerous? the KQED News headline asks. “This bill would let you petition the state to take their guns.” To make the case for adding to the state’s citizen disarmament options, a couple examples are given of California “gun violence restraining orders” being used to take guns away under petitions filed by family members or law enforcement officers. This latest push expands the list of those eligible to initiate gun seizures to employers, co-workers, high school and college staff members, and mental health workers. Living a few hours south of Chicago, the anti-gun policies from Illinois’ blue dot, known as Cook County, in an otherwise red state are a real threat. Recently, a small town with a rather affluent population passed a ridiculous ban which prohibits the possession of popular sporting rifles such as the AR-15 and standard capacity magazines. The Council of Great City Schools has published a resolution calling for severe infringements on the Second Amendment. It is something all gun owners and parents should be concerned with. Second Amendment groups, including the National Rifle Association (NRA), Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), and hundreds of grassroots organizations, have preserved our right to self-defense and the Second Amendment. This has been done by making our voice heard to lawmakers at all levels of government. We have won some battles and lost others, but for the most part, our continuing efforts to keep lawmakers honest (regarding firearms legislation) have been successful. A spike in the number of initiated background checks in March, via the FBI’s National Instant Check System (NICS), reflects a significant increase in the number of people apparently interested in buying guns, and a major gun rights organization is crediting the wave of gun control hysteria following the shooting tragedy at a Florida high school. YouTube’s announcement this week of a new firearms content policy is troubling. We [National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)] suspect it will be interpreted to block much more content than the stated goal of firearms and certain accessory sales. Especially worrisome is the potential for blocking educational content that serves an instructional and skill-building purpose. YouTube’s policy announcement has also served to invite political activists to flood their review staff with complaints about any video to which they may proffer manufactured outrage. Presumably, because of the actions of the single 19-year-old who committed mass murder in Parkland, Florida. Many of us have been thinking it, but an Oregon newspaper recently raised an interesting question. Are retailers that decide to arbitrarily raise the age for gun sales violating anti-discrimination laws? According to Willamette Week, a Portland-based alternative weekly, there are 17 Fred Meyer stores in the Beaver State that sell firearms. Bi-Mart also announced the change in policy. However, a retired Lane County judge, Jim Hargreaves, says the decision by retailers might slam head on into Oregon state law. Oregon law states that any person over 18 can purchase a gun, and that the anti-discrimination law says anybody of legal age can’t be denied something available to others. In response to the tragedy in Florida, the pro tem Mayor of Dallas has one message for the NRA: Take your convention elsewhere. “I am saying to the NRA, reconsider coming to Dallas,” Dwaine Caraway, told reporters Monday. “There will be marches and demonstrations should they come to Dallas.” In truth, wherever the NRA holds its convention, anti-gun forces either marshal local activists or bus them to create a demonstration and make it look as if they have a larger grass roots presence than they really do. I was writing a post, wondering if Trump would throw gun owners under the bus, then a news bulletin popped up to say he already had. He has instructed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to ban bump stocks and trigger devices. So, the question we need to ask is simple, “Is this a delaying action to keep the gun grabbers at bay, or the start of a total sell out?” I am sure the title of this story alone may be enough to raise gun owners’ hackles. Iowa is one of only six states that does not have a state constitutional provision that protects the right to keep and bear arms in some way. The other five states without such a provision are California, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York. The two outliers on that list are Iowa and Minnesota.
